Q. I’m trying to erase Solid State and NVME drives. Can I use the DoD Erasure method to overwrite these?

A. Because of the architecture of SSDs and NVMEs using the same overwriting techniques that are acceptable on hard drives is not secure. For SSDs and NVMEs you should always select NIST Purge. This will attempt to perform the latest NIST 800-88r1 purge techniques (Block Erase or Cryptographic Erasure) if supported by the device. If neither is supported then it will drop to the NIST 800-88r1 clear Security Erase specification.
